Georgetown Washington, DC - Neighborhood Tour

Georgetown, Washington DC - Tour The Districts Charming & Historic Neighborhood

November 2020

Georgetown is a historic neighborhood that boasts federal-style architecture, cobblestone streets, and fashion and design shops. The neighborhood predates the surrounding communities by 40 years. Join Agent Daniel Luke Jones as he shows you everything this neighborhood has to offer as well as an often-overlooked national memorial that’s nearby.

One of the many things that set Georgetown apart from other neighborhoods in the District is the variety of shops, restaurants, and luxurious hotels. In more recent times, this fashionable neighborhood on the Potomac has become world-renowned in culture and fashion. But, for the people who live here, it is a captivating place to call home.

The Housing Market in Georgetown

In addition to the cobblestone streets and a variety of shops and restaurants, this neighborhood features some of the most exclusive (and oldest) row homes and mansions in the district. But just how much are some of these grand estates?

With a mix of detached homes, rowhouses, and condos, the average price in Georgetown is currently $1.8 million. The Georgetown housing market also saw a record-setting 2020 with 135 homes listed for sale, the highest of the past five years. In May of 2020, the median days on market was only 4 days.

Things To See & Do in Georgetown

In this video tour, agent Daniel Luke Jones takes you to some of his favorite things to see and do within Georgetown. From the C&O Canal for a picturesque walk or bike ride to a private island just across the Georgetown waterfront, this community offers something for everyone.

The C&O Canal is maintained by the National Park Service and it’s towpath a walkable path along the Potomac. Truly unlike anything else in the city, it’s perfect for taking a walk, going for a run, or just getting out and enjoying the weather. In addition to the C&O Canal, you and your friends or family can get active on the Potomac River. Georgetown’s waterfront offers a wide range of fun from kayaking, cycling, and amazing city views.

Just opposite the Georgetown waterfront, there is an island that is actually a national memorial- Theodore Roosevelt Island. For more than a century, it was Mason’s Island, the home of John Mason and was one of the finest farming estates in the region. Now it stands a living memorial to Theodore Roosevelt, America’s 26th president, nicknamed “the great conservationist”.

Theodore Roosevelt was active and enthusiastic about the outdoors. As president, he was notorious for dragging diplomats and government officials on tough hikes through the area's "wild" lands.

There are three trails on the island and each is named after one of the habitats they created:

  • Swamp Trail

    • At 1 ½ miles, this loop trail is the island’s longest. It passes through swampy woods and cattail marsh. The trail is part pea gravel and part boardwalk.

  • Woods Trail

    • This short, ⅓ mile trail passes through the heart of the island, including the memorial plaza with its statue and fountains. It is paved with pea gravel.

  • Upland Trail

    • This ¾ mile trail traverses the length of the island. It passes through the forest and loops around the former site of the Mason mansion.
